A Message from the New JAPNA Editor-in-Chief

Dear APNA Colleagues,
As I begin my time as JAPNA Editor-in-Chief, I’d like to tell you all a little more about me: I began my career as an inpatient psychiatric-mental health nurse, working primarily with adults with serious mental illness. I then started my academic career teaching PMH nursing in traditional and accelerated nursing programs before joining the administrative leadership team as DNP director, and most recently serving as Associate Dean of Operations and Scholarship at Samuel Merritt University. Some of the most enjoyable and rewarding moments of my career have involved supporting students and fellow colleagues in publishing their work.
For that reason, I am launching the below initiatives to get to know you and your work in the hopes of publishing more of your important scholarship in JAPNA:
- JAPNA Developmental Writers Group: Apply here by March 21 to participate in a series of workshops in which you will work within a group and receive individualized feedback about how to move your work from in your head to the page. The goal is to develop a manuscript for submission to JAPNA.
- JAPNA Editor Office Hours: Register for one or more monthly office hours sessions with me! These office hours are a regular opportunity for you to ask questions about any stage of your project or manuscript development from design to final edits.
- Call for Papers: We have just posted calls for papers for three upcoming special issues that will explore the concepts of:
- Suicide (9/1/25 deadline)
- Telehealth (1/1/26 deadline)
- The impact of reduced funding for mental health care and research outcomes (7/1/26 deadline)
Feel free to reach out to me with inquiries by email (michelle.hampton@sjsu.edu) and when it’s APNA Annual Conference time again, let me know if you’d like to me to stop by your presentation or poster to discuss your work. To share or follow my posts of JAPNA research and scholarship, connect with me on LinkedIn.
I look forward to the year ahead!
Best regards,
Michelle DeCoux Hampton, RN, PhD, MS
