Who are two PMH-RNs with a demonstrated commitment to advancing psychiatric-mental health nursing? Hint: They received this year’s APNA Memorial Scholarships!
Meet Joshua Moran Jiménez, BSN, PMH-BC, CPAHA, CARN, CPHQ, NE-BC, Assistant Nurse Manager at the Medical University of South Carolina and Amy L. Weaver, MHA, BSN, RN, CEN PMH-BC, Clinical Nurse Manager at University Hospital Psychiatric Services, UT Southwestern. With this scholarship, APNA covers their registration, travel, and lodging for the APNA 38th Annual Conference.
The APNA Memorial Scholarship program is made possible by donations honoring APNA members who made a lasting impact on psychiatric-mental health nurses and those they serve and is intended to inspire other nurses to carry on their legacy.
Jiménez has plans to emulate the dedication of these nursing giants toward improving patient care. “I dream of making a lasting impact that prepares nurses to take a proactive therapeutic approach that is patient-centered with the therapeutic relationship as the foundation and seek to reinforce the plan of care, coping skills, and reducing the need for seclusion or restraint as well as workplace violence instances,” he states.
Weaver also intends to make important contributions to the future of the field through improvements at organizational levels. She explains, “My professional goal is to continue taking on more demanding roles in psychiatric nursing leadership, where I can be most effective in advocating for and facilitating changes in the profession of psychiatric nursing to improve the structure of safety, support, and retention.”
As scholarship recipients, both indicate a desire to enhance their skills and knowledge base while attending the APNA 38th Annual Conference as very special guests. Weaver notes, “Advocating for solutions to mental health disparities is a significant driver in furthering my knowledge and experience in innovative trends and practices that can be applied to improving services within my community. The APNA Annual Conference offers these opportunities.”
Jiménez would agree stating, “The passionate energy encompassing the APNA Annual Conference is truly reinvigorating and inspiring.”
APNA will honor Jiménez and Weaver, along with other accomplished PMH nurses on October 9. Learn more about the ceremony and other conference highlights for both virtual and in-person attendance.
