Unlocking the Brain’s Resilience With Dr. Nora D. Volkow
As Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), Dr. Nora D. Volkow is leading research to unlock the brain’s resilience with cutting-edge advancements in addiction research and science to enhance our understanding of substance use disorders (SUDs). For example, NIDA research involving innovative tools to study brain function, gene expression, and complex behaviors holds promise to improve models used in SUD treatment. And by identifying socioenvironmental factors such as discrimination and economic hardship as prevention targets, NIDA’s work helps clinicians address underlying issues in patients’ lives, offering new tools to support patients in recovery.
Psychiatric-mental health nurses will have the chance to hear directly from this globally recognized leader at the APNA 23rd Annual Clinical Psychopharmacology Institute (CPI) this June 5-8, 2025 in Rockville, Maryland, or via livestream.
“Nora’s work has had some of the most profound influence on my practice over the years! Her research on brain development and its impact on decision-making and impulse control is truly excellent. Her most impactful work lies in SUDs being a disease of the brain and how the brain heals throughout the recovery process.”
